There can be no knowledge without emotion. We may be aware of a truth, yet until we have felt its force, it is not ours. To the cognition of the brain must be added the experience of the soul. – Arnold Bennett

What do emotions do? How do they influence an artist’s work? With many of her best works being created in intense states of anger, joy or calmness, Romanian artist Maria Nitulescu reflects on the effect these states of mind have on productivity and creation. Capturing Emotions at the Gallery of the Romanian Cultural Institute (RKI Galerie) in Berlin Mitte presents expressive large-scale oil paintings as well as smaller, more fragile works on paper. For these traditional Chinese calligraphy tools are used, allowing the artist to emphasize the expression of emotion through movement and dynamic gestures.

Using her own intimate visual language, the works on show offer a private thought exchange through colour and line, contrasted with words and sentences. In this way, a dichotomy between verbal and non-verbal cues of expression, between depictive and propositional representations, is created. The works invite the viewers to focus on their own moods and emotions, which may be contradictory to the artist’s own. The abstract, non-representational drawings and paintings explore in this way the role of visual perception and allow wide-ranging, personal readings.

Maria Nitulescu (born 1989 in Bucharest, Romania) is an interdisciplinary artist engaging with diverse subjects using research from various disciplines as a tool for deconstructing abstract ideas. She uses different means of visual expression, such as printing, painting and photography. Maria studied at the National University of Arts in Bucharest, the Academy of Fine Arts Brera, Milan, and is currently studying MA Art in Context at Universität der Künste Berlin. She has shown in solo and group exhibitions in Romania, Austria, Germany, UK, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Egypt and USA. Maria Nitulescu currently lives and works in Berlin.
